Afghanistan Migration & Community Dialog Series (AMCDS)

(A Flagship Initiative of AIMED)

Program Overview
The Afghanistan Migration & Community Dialog Series is a flagship initiative of AIMED designed to create a sustained, policy-oriented platform for examining the evolving dynamics of migration from Afghanistan and integration processes in the United States.

The series brings together scholars, practitioners, and community voices to move beyond fragmented discussions and generate a more coherent understanding of the structural challenges facing migrants from Afghanistan. By structuring conversations across multiple sessions, the initiative produces cumulative insights that inform both policy and practice.

Why This Series Matters:

Public and policy discussions on migration from Afghanistan often remain fragmented, reactive, and shaped by short-term events or immediate needs. While such discussions are important, they frequently fail to engage with the deeper structural and institutional dynamics that shape long-term integration outcomes. As a result, migration-related challenges are often addressed in isolation, without meaningful connection to policy design or institutional coordination.

This Dialogue Series was established in response to that gap. By shifting the focus from isolated issues to system-level analysis, it emphasizes that areas such as education, employment, and social integration are interconnected processes shaped by policy and institutional structures. By bringing academic research, policy analysis, and lived community experience into a shared analytical space, the series contributes to the generation of coherent, in-depth, and actionable insights aimed at improving integration processes for migrants from Afghanistan in the United States.

Objectives

The Dialog Series is designed to:

  • Create a sustained platform for policy-relevant dialogue on migration and integration

  • Bridge the gap between research, policy, and practice

  • Generate analytically grounded insights that can inform decision-making

  • Elevate community perspectives alongside institutional expertise

  • Identify structural barriers and practical pathways for improving integration outcomes

What We Do

The series combines multiple formats to ensure both depth of analysis and practical relevance:

  • Panel Discussions: Bringing together experts, practitioners, and community representatives to examine key issues

  • Policy-Oriented Reports: Translating discussions into structured, actionable insights

  • Collaborative Research: Engaging in joint research initiatives with academic and policy institutions

  • Community Engagement: Incorporating lived experiences into policy-relevant conversations

This approach ensures that the series moves beyond discussion toward knowledge production and applied impact.

Sessions

The Dialog Series is structured as a sequence of interconnected sessions, each focusing on a specific dimension of migration and integration:

Impact:

The Dialog Series aims to contribute to both policy and practice by producing insights that are analytically grounded and operationally relevant.

By connecting research, institutional perspectives, and lived experiences, the initiative supports:

  • More informed policy discussions

  • Better alignment between systems and community needs

  • The development of coordinated and evidence-based approaches to integration

Over time, the series seeks to establish a knowledge base that informs long-term strategies for addressing migration and integration challenges in the United States.

The Dialogue Series is implemented in collaboration with academic institutions, research centers, and community partners, including:

  • The George Washington University- Sigur Center for Asian Studies

  • Refugee Educational Advancement Laboratory (REAL)-GWU
